WHAT IS Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry eye is a common condition that occurs when your tears aren’t able to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. It may be due to inadequate quantity of tears or poor quality of tears.
You may commonly experience dry eyes in certain situations, such as on an airplane, in an air-conditioned room, while riding a bike or after looking at a computer screen for long hours.
A treatment for dry eyes has traditionally been mainly lifestyle changes, eye drops and other treatment methods that offer temporary relief. You’ll likely need to take these measures indefinitely to control the symptoms of dry eyes.
Lipiflow is a new treatment performed in your doctor’s office design to remove blockages from the Meibomian glands, allowing them to properly function and produce the oil the makeup that lipid layer of the tear film.
CAUSES OF DRY EYE
Deficiency / dysfunction of tear producing glands of eye
Increasing age. After 65 yrs, majority experience some symptoms of dry eye
Females are more likely to develop dry eye
Medications like cold medicine, BP medicines, antidepressants etc.
Heavy reading or digital device use
Living / working in dry environment
Prolonged contact lens wear
Diets poor in essential fatty acids
Certain health conditions like diabetes, arthritis, lupus etc.
Dry Eye Treatment Options
Eye drops used for treatment of dry eye are tear supplements and ointments which have to be used repeatedly sometimes even more than 6-8 times a day making it uncomfortable to use and leading to high non compliance. The tear supplements usually provide only temporary symptomatic relief and not a cure. For mild to moderate dry eye symptoms, these might be enough if you are compliant.
LipiFlow is a Thermal Pulsation System designed to treat Evaporative Dry Eye by unblocking the Meibomian Glands that produce the lipid (oil) layer of our tear film. This innovative technology works by applying warm heat to the inside of the eyelid near the blocked glands while simultaneously providing a gentle massage to the outside of the eyelid. This combination of heat and applied pressure opens the Meibomian Glands, allowing them to secrete the blocked oil. Once this procedure is completed, the glands resume natural production of tear film oil and most patients experience symptom relief almost immediately. Since Meibomian Gland Dysfunction is a chronic condition, most patients will need to repeat the LipiFlow treatment 2-3 yearly.

LIPIFLOW® – THE REVOLUTIONARY TREATMENT FOR DRY EYE
LipiFlow treatment uses localised heat and pressure therapy on the lids to remove blockages from the Meibomian glands, allowing them to properly produce the protective lipid layer of the tear film. Lipiflow is supported by more than 30 patents with studies demonstrating its safe & effective results. It is designed to minimize patient discomfort during a 12-minute treatment that gently massages the eyelids.
Lipiflow activators deliver a combination of heat to the inner lids and simultaneous therapeutic motion to the outer lids removing blockages from the Meibomian glands, thereby resuming normal oil or lipid production which is essential for a healthy tear film, stable vision and ocular comfort.
Although, some relief is experienced soon after the procedure, maximum results are usually experienced 4-8 weeks after treatment. Usually patients do not need to repeat the procedure before 18 months although compliant patients practically claim relief upto 3 years.
The cost of dry eye treatment depends on the type of surgery and the lens you choose. Also dry eye treatment may be covered by the medical insurance policy.
